Dear Kids, Assalam-o-Alaikum!
Welcome to the February edition of Hilal for Kids! This month, our hearts and thoughts are particularly with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir who are facing a life of uncertainty, fear and oppression at the hands of Indian security forces as well as Hindu fanatics. Kashmir Day, on February 5, is observed throughout Pakistan and all over the world, to express solidarity and unanimity with our Kashmiri brethren, especially the resilient children and youth of IIOJK who have written a golden chapter of history with their unmatched courage and irrepressible resoluteness. Their exceptional valor leaves an inspiring sense of hope for us all that one day they shall be able to break the shackles of Indian subjugation.
While we pay our heartfelt homage to Kashmiri children and youth, our aim must be to keep ourselves prepared by forging unity, harmony and integrity, keeping in mind the Quaid’s golden principle of ‘Faith, Unity & Discipline’. Our strength lies in acquiring the modern day knowledge, and the awareness worthy of today’s most challenging digital age. Hilal for Kids is privileged to inviting you to garner this strength from our series of articles on the subject of modern science and info-tech besides the Muslim scientists’ contribution towards promoting scientific knowledge, vocational training and useful learning. This month’s edition takes you to the amazing world of ‘prisms’ that tells you the secret of how prisms split light into a spectrum of colors, explaining the science behind rainbows, and the magic behind light. It will certainly ignite your curiosity about the wonders of physics, and the beauty of natural phenomena. You will know what prism is: a three-dimensional solid object in which the two ends are identical; the combination of flat faces, identical bases and equal cross-sections; it works because the different colors of light travel at different speeds inside the glass. You will know, it was Isaac Newton who first established, in 1672, on the refraction of light through prism that’s the foundation of modern optics.
Moreover, our regular feature this month pays homage to a towering figure from the golden period of Islam, whose name is Sabit bin Qura. This brilliant scientist excelled in numerous fields, including mathematics, astronomy, geography, and medicine. His story will inspire you to explore the interconnectedness of various disciplines and appreciate the rich legacy of Muslim science and philosophy. Besides, the inspiring story about Arfa Karim, Pakistan’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional, reminds our ‘Alpha’ and ‘Beta’ generations of the boundless potential within every child in our country to excel in today’s AI era. In February, we also celebrate World Radio Day. So, let’s discover how radio has connected the world, bringing news, entertainment, and education to people around the world. This fascinating journey through the history of radio highlights the evolution of radio technology, its role in communication, and how it continues to be a vital medium in today’s digital age.
Stay curious, stay informed, and keep striving for excellence. Happy reading!
