Sisterhood And Survival: Unleashing the Power of Women Supporting Women

December 2024

In a world where women face numerous cultural and systemic barriers, finding a supportive tribe and building a strong sisterhood can spark profound personal and socio-economic change. Sisterhood is more than just an idea; it embodies a powerful community that extends beyond family, friends, and professional networks. It encompasses empathy, unity, support, encouragement, and empowerment even from those who may not know each other personally but offer unwavering support. Sisterhood takes many forms, from biological relationships to friendships, professional connections, social media groups, social movements, and mentorship programs which create spaces where women feel genuinely heard, understood, and uplifted.
Having a supportive female friend is a powerful source of strength and comfort for emotional well-being. Whether facing challenges like personal crises, homesickness, living far from family, or celebrating achievements like passing an exam, landing a new job or promotion, or starting a small business.
They are often by your side as bridesmaids at your wedding or comforting companions as you embrace motherhood.
These connections provide a safe space for women to lean on each other, offering understanding and reassurance
Sisterhood serves as a transformative force in cultural and social contexts, empowering women to assert their individuality and challenge patriarchal norms. In Pakistan, numerous inspiring women exemplify the power of supportive sisterhood by providing mentorship and opportunities to others. For example, Khalida Brohi, founder of the Sughar Foundation, a non-profit organisation that empowers rural women by offering training in skill development, education, and awareness raising of women in tribal areas along with providing them with opportunities for launching small businesses. Her work addresses cultural constraints like exchanged marriages, child marriages, and honour killings.
Faiza Yousuf, founder of WomenInTechPK, connects her students with accomplished women in the tech industry, providing role models and access to industry knowledge. Kalsoom Lakhani, through Invest2Innovate (i2i), has supported young women in pursuing startups.
Sadaffe Abid’s organisation, CIRCLE, empowers women through technology, helping them achieve financial independence.
Saba Gul, founder of Popinjay, enables underprivileged Pakistani women artisans to access global markets, making their crafts a source of sustainable livelihood. Through these initiatives, sisterhood strengthens communities, breaks down barriers, and creates spaces for women to thrive economically and socially. Sisterhood demonstrates that shared vision and collaboration can lead to remarkable success. For example, Dr. Sara Saeed and Dr. Iffat Zafar co-founded Sehat Kahani, a telemedicine company, transforming their shared vision into a thriving reality. Such professional connections—and sometimes personal support from a friend, sister, or mentor—are essential in helping us overcome challenges and flourish in life.

“My mentor, a teacher I met at a training session, inspired me and helped me learn new skills. Her guidance opened the doors to freelancing for me. With her support, I was able to build skills and confidence to pursue a freelancing career. I am incredibly grateful for how she helped shape my professional journey”.

“When I moved to a new city for my graduation, everything felt unfamiliar, until I met my soul sister. She welcomed me with warmth and made this city feel like home. Throughout the four years of my graduation, her support, mentorship, and guidance showed me the true meaning of sisterhood”

Sisterhood serves as both a personal connection and a collective force for social change, creating inclusive communities that empower women to overcome obstacles through networking. Professional platforms like LinkedIn exemplify how women endorse each other’s skills, recommend jobs, and provide referrals for career growth. Sisterhood fosters a positive, supportive culture, where women can uplift each other sincerely. By inspiring collective action, it advocates for a more equitable society and mobilises women to address issues such as workplace inequality, harassment, and gender-based violence.
In her TED Talk, "Small Ways Women Can Support Each Other at Work," Crystal Martin shares impactful strategies to create a supportive workplace for women. She emphasises active listening, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and celebrating each other’s achievements. Campaigns like #TimesUp and #MeToo also illustrate the power of collective female support globally. Digital spaces are increasingly becoming safe, empowering havens for women to connect, share stories, and support each other. The "Soul Sisters Pakistan" Facebook group, with over 318,000 members, exemplifies this vibrant digital sisterhood, fostering solidarity and empowerment among Pakistani women worldwide.
Sisterhood fosters career advancement in male-dominated fields, by building supportive networks that promote growth. A study published by Harvard Business Review highlights that women with a strong network of female friends are more likely to attain high-paying executive positions. Brian Uzzi noted, “Women in the top 25% for network centrality, who also maintained an inner circle of 1-3 female connections, attained leadership roles with 2.5 times greater authority and pay than those of female peers without this network structure”. The study demonstrates how a robust sisterhood network significantly amplifies career progress by offering mentorship, visibility, insight, and unwavering support. With this combination, women are better positioned to navigate complex career paths and secure leadership roles with enhanced authority and financial rewards.

Support among women does not need to be costly or complex: often, small acts of kindness have the greatest impact.
Every positive thought can inspire an action that helps others lead safer, more fulfilling, and more productive lives. Starting with simple steps can be transformative.
The essence of sisterhood lies in such simple yet powerful gestures. Just being present, offering emotional support, and sharing words of encouragement can help women overcome personal and professional challenges, fostering a culture where they can thrive together.
