Budgies

October 2024

I am a 10-year-old fifth grader. I love animals, especially cats. All my friends and relatives have one each. So when I was four, I asked my parents for a cat. But they always said, “It’s too much of a responsibility, and that pets ruin furniture.” I could understand that, but pets are kept in every house. Ever since I discovered some outside cats, I started hanging out with them. My bestie is Smokey but I can’t see her nowadays. Probably because she is scared of my brother, who keeps kicking her as a plaything.

Smokey
Smokey is a black colored cat who likes cuddling. She is a (stray) cat who likes to sleep when we are at school. Her favorite toys are my stuffed animals. She is also very nice and when someone isn’t feeling happy, she cuddles with them as a sign of love.
Finally, A Pet
A few months ago, my aunt gave me a kitten as a surprise gift. I was so happy! But before the day even ended, my mom gave it away to someone else. I was so sad! So to calm me down, my grandmother whom we all call Nano, allowed me to have two parrots. I was so happy once again! We went to the mall right away.
The Not-So-Perfect Pet
We got two green budgies – a male and a female – to make a pair, we named them Jewel and Rio. They started life full of chirpiness and noise as you could imagine. But after a while we noticed something. Jewel kept picking on Rio and seemed to be getting ruder by the day. She didn’t let him eat or sleep. He seemed to be getting weaker and weaker. Finally, one day we decided to separate them. But before that, on a fateful night when everybody was asleep, Jewel found a way to get out of the cage and started flying. My mom heard the flapping of the wings and woke everyone up. But it was too late! Since we had the air conditioner on, maybe it was too cold for her but I wonder what part of the running fan attracted her that she crashed right into it.
The Perfect Pet
We could all see that Rio was suffering from anxiety. And so was I. I was so sad! So I went out and got him a brand new bestie. It was a female budgie who had blue and white colored feathers and I loved her. We named her Periwinkle. After a while, we upgraded their cage. This one is bigger but dirtier. We painted it white and made the following upgrades:
1.    A stem (like a branch, for sitting).
2.    A feeding bowl full of birdseed and grains.
3.    Two water bowls in case they fight.
4.    Nest for their juniors!
And for their entertainment:
1.    A white swing.
2.    A wiggle rope (that is very wiggly).
3.    Two spinning wheels.
When Periwinkle just moved in, she was rather frightened. But when she got used to the environment, she seemed to calm down. At first, they just stared at each other trying to figure out who the other one was. Then they started talking and introduced themselves.
This is how they started living and enjoying themselves and entertaining me.
My little parrots are my bundle of joy! I really enjoy spending my days with them chirping around me.
