If one desires to gain knowledge, travel around the world, and meet different people then all it requires is to open a book and experience the magic. Indeed, the magic of books is quite because they transport readers to new places they have never been to, times they have never belonged to and characters they might never meet in real life. A book is a world full of mystery, magic, and fun.
Children who aspire to achieve the extraordinary are often found immersed in books. As Dr. Suess of the fame ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ also quotes: “If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books.” So, here is the remarkable journey of a boy named Adnan who believed in Ernest Hemingway’s saying: “There is no friend as loyal as a book”, and befriended books.
Adnan was a curious little boy. From a tender age, he found solace and adventure between the pages of a book. What began as a casual interest in the brightly colored pictures of his Ladybird books soon blossomed into a full-fledged passion. An avid reader who was merely 14, had more books than games or toys.
Bedtime stories were a cherished ritual in his household. Yaqoob and Rehana, Adnan’s parents introduced Ladybird Children books to their children. While his siblings often grew tired, Adnan's eyes would widen with excitement as his mother wove tales of faraway lands and heroic deeds. The enchanting worlds of Pinocchio and the Wizard of Oz ignited his imagination, transporting him to realms beyond his wildest dreams. He often read new books at school and narrated them to his family at ‘storytime’.
As Adnan grew older, so did his love for books. The school became a platform for sharing his newfound passion. He would regale his classmates with stories from the pages he read so happily. To encourage this budding storyteller, his parents suggested that he write down his thoughts and impressions. Little did they know, they were nurturing a writer in the making. So, for every book that he read, he wrote his reviews down in a reading journal.
Adnan's writing blossomed alongside his reading. With each story he penned, his vocabulary expanded, his observation sharpened, and his understanding of the world deepened. The characters he met in books became his friends, their experiences shaped his own perspective and he gained lessons from their adventures. He noted their wise decisions and promised not to make the mistakes they made.
One day, a pivotal moment arrived during a history lesson. His teacher emphasized the importance of education and quoted Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah: "Without education, it is complete darkness; with education, it is light." These words resonated deeply with Adnan. He understood that day, that books were not just sources of entertainment but they were also powerful tools for learning and growth.
Determined to build his own literary sanctuary, Adnan began collecting books with passion. His parents, recognizing his passion, supported his endeavor wholeheartedly. His parents bought him all the books he wanted and a bookshelf soon graced his room, its shelves, made out of white formica gradually started to fill up with a diverse collection of stories, adventures, and knowledge.
News of Adnan's burgeoning home library spread like wildfire. His schoolmates were amazed by his dedication, and his teachers lauded his intellectual curiosity. The school administration even organized a visit to his library, hoping to inspire other students to follow in his footsteps.
