The subsequent success of the courageous students of Army Public School Peshawar in their professional endeavors is a testament to their determination to overcome adversarial forces hindering the country's progress. The families of APS attack victims, who have played a significant role in supporting these students in pursuing their careers, send a powerful message to those who propagate despair.
A few days assume greater significance in one's life, leaving an indelible mark on the soul, as the sun dawned on the morning of December 16, 2014—a day that would forever alter the course of my existence. It was like any other day, and I was occupied in the teaching routine at Army Public School (APS) Peshawar when an unfamiliar sound pierced the air. At first, I dismissed it as a routine drill, but the persistent gunfire shattered that illusion. The realization that the premises of our school were under a vicious assault of terror emanated waves of panic and fear among the children. The junior branch adolescents were oblivious to the tragedy they were about to experience.
It was a herculean task to calm these young students while sustaining their composure in the face of the ongoing fiasco. The bravado I maintained masked the internal turmoil as I grappled with the responsibility of being the pillar of strength for my class. For my students, I had to anchor them with hope and avoid panic, which could further complicate their rescue. These were enormously testing moments for me as a class teacher and the only source of hope for my young students. It was a situation filled with despair and the anticipation of tragedy until we learned about the arrival of Pakistan Army troops. Their arrival marked a turning point in our ordeal. With their courage and precision, they rescued us, guiding us to safety through the back exit of the school to a nearby park.
The clock seemed to move slowly, each passing minute laden with uncertainty and fear. I remained in the park with the children until 5 pm, ensuring each child was reunited with their family. Traumatic events of the day triggered a wave of emotions, serving as a sobering reminder that healing is a continuous process. As I reflect on that dark chapter in my life, I am reminded of the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” The December 16, 2014 tragedy serves as a testament to the enduring power of love and courage in the face of hate and despair.
The attack on defenseless students at APS Peshawar sent shockwaves around the world. However, the despair gave rise to a renewed resolve for collective efforts to eradicate the menace of inhuman acts of terror. Despite the shock and suffering, the students' return to school showcased exceptional dedication, resolve, and hope from parents, school authorities, and the children who endured a profound ordeal. This day of return symbolized the collective will of the Pakistani nation, prepared to withstand challenges against all odds.

While the attack shocked the entire nation, it also tested the bravery and resolve of Pakistan to combat terrorism and extremism. The country emerged from that test not only intact but strengthened. The tragedy united the entire nation and provided a clear direction to eliminate this menace from our country. The improved security situation in the country and the successes achieved against terrorism in the last nine years are attributed to the martyrs of the APS attack.
The former United States Ambassador, David Hale, remarked after his visit to APS on its reopening, testifying to this effect: "What I saw in the faces, words, and actions of the people I met on Monday in Peshawar was humanity. Humanity is grieving last year's loss but looking ahead with resilience, resolve, and hope–some qualities that make life worthwhile. The classrooms I visited were full of students eager to learn. The teachers were busy engaging young minds. The school administrators were developing curriculum and planning for the future. They were all doing what students, teachers, and administrators do everywhere, but perhaps with a special resolve. I heard from the APS Peshawar community that they would not let what happened there define them”.
Following this vicious attack, Pakistan witnessed a reinvigorated fight against terrorism, with its Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) taking the lead. The entire nation stood behind its Armed Forces to eliminate the scourge of terrorism and extremism. This national pledge transformed into a collective struggle and resulted in immense successes in suppressing a rampant wave of terrorism. Pakistan had to undertake this whole-of-the-nation fight to a logical end, as it threatened the very existence of our tolerant society. On this day, we also remember the immense sacrifices rendered by our security forces. Through their tremendous efforts, we have been able to turn the tide against the menace of terrorism. This fight is not yet over, and we will persevere until terrorism is completely eradicated from our country.
The subsequent success of these courageous students in their professional lives speaks volumes about their tenacity to overcome adversarial forces intent on hindering the country's progress. Families of the victims of the APS attack deserve significant credit for supporting these kids in pursuing their vocations, sending a strong message to those promoting hopelessness. These students faced and conquered various challenges, and their determination and commitment are worthy of emulation by those engaged in similar struggles worldwide. These irrepressible youngsters responded to adversity with a message of steadfast resolve and courage, embodying the collective character of the Pakistani nation.
The famous musical tribute truly depicts the resolve, hope, and commitment of these youngsters.
