Prevent Yourself from Cold

December 2023

Friends! It is December, the last month of year 2023. From now on, weather will start getting cold. By the end of this month we usually have winter holidays. The winter season you know comes with not only holidays, New Year greetings and Quaid-i-Azam’s birth anniversary, but also brings with it warm gatherings, sweet festivities and beautiful snowcaps. While we enjoy much, we forget to take care of our health that can be affected by cold weather.
The colder weather, shorter days, and increased time indoors can challenge our wellbeing. Here are some important tips to help you stay healthy and thrive during the coming winter months:
Maintain a Balanced Diet: A balanced diet is crucial during the winter season. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as citrus fruit like oranges and pomegranates, and winter squashes are packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants. A healthy diet strengthens our immune system and provides energy, helping us to combat winter blues.
Stay Hydrated: Even though weather is colder, it is essential to stay hydrated. The dry indoor air can cause dehydration, leading to dry skin, fatigue and even reduced immunity. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
Stay Warm: Proper clothing is our first line of defence against winter's chill. Layer your clothing to trap warmth, and don't forget your hat, gloves, and a good-quality coat. In highly cold areas in the north of Pakistan, hypothermia and frostbite can be real risks if you are not properly dressed for the cold.
Gas Heater Hazards: While keeping our rooms warm, we need to be very careful about gas heaters. Ask parents to use heaters approved by gas authorities. Do not leave gas heaters open for long. Proper exhaust system must function well. The carbon from burnt gas should not remain in the room. Gas heaters consume oxygen inside, which needs to be replaced by fresh air at right time. Switch off the heaters before you go to sleep. It is a very necessary precaution because of the gas load-shedding during winters. As gas supply stops, heaters remain open even burners are put off. Disasters occur when gas discharges in the room without burning. Beware of it.
Protect Skin: The cold, dry air can be harsh on our skin. Use a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and protect it from becoming dry, itchy or cracked. Don't forget to apply sunscreen if you are spending time outdoors, as snow can reflect the sun's ultraviolet rays and lead to sunburn.
Manage Stress: Winter can sometimes bring feelings of sadness or depression. The lack of sunlight can affect our mood. Try to get outside during the daylight hours, and consider using light therapy lamps. Staying socially connected with friends and family can also help combat feelings of isolation.
Flu Vaccination: Influenza is more common during the winter months. Getting a flu shot is an effective way to reduce the risk of getting sick. It is especially important for vulnerable people, such as the elderly and young children.
Exercise Regularly: Staying active in winters can be challenging, but it is crucial for our overall healthcare. Exercise can boost our mood, improve circulation and keep immune system strong. Consider indoor activities like playing scrable, ludo or joining a gym to maintain fitness.
Prevent Winter Accidents: Winter is a time when accidents like slips and falls are more common due to icy sidewalks and roads in extremely cold areas like Gilgit, Baltistan. Be cautious and wear appropriate footwear with good traction. Use salt or sand to de-ice walkways and driveways to prevent accidents.
Proper Heating and Ventilation: Ensure your home is adequately heated and ventilated. Use space heaters safely, keeping them away from inflammable materials. Make sure that carbon monoxide detectors are functional enough to prevent poisoning.
Stay Informed About Forecasts: Keep an eye on weather forecasts, and be prepared for any extreme weather event. Having an emergency kit ready, including blankets, non-perishable food, and flashlights, can be a lifesaver in case of power outages or severe storms.
By taking these steps to care for your physical and mental health during winters, you can enjoy beauty and festivities without compromising your wellbeing. Remember that staying well-nourished, hydrated, warm, and active is essential for healthy and enjoyable winter time.
