17th Karachi International Book Fair

The International Book Fair in Karachi is among the biggest events of the metropolitan city, where people participate in huge numbers and crowds from all walks of life get the chance to interact with some of the biggest names in literature. The book fair provides a platform to engage with renowned writers, purchase books of their interest and often witness live book launches. The book fair houses literally genres ranging from history, fantasy, science fiction, geography, and much more. 

The 17th edition of the Karachi International Book Fair (KIBF) commenced on December 8, 2022 and continued till December 12, 2022. The first-ever KIBF event was organized in 2005 with a view to induce the habit of book reading among the masses, while making millions of books available under a single roof at subsidized rates. The event not only allows people to get their hands on their favorite books, but also impacts their minds with the availability of a variety of different genres.
The book fair was inaugurated by the honorable Education Minister of Sindh, Syed Sardar Ali Shah and former member of Sindh Provincial Assembly, Mahtab Akbar Rashdi was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony, with the senior leader of a political party Amir Khan. Chairman Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association and KIBF, Chairman Aziz Khalid and other eminent personalities, including writers, poets, and politicians also attended the inauguration ceremony.
Participation of Local and International Publishers
150 leading publishers and book sellers from Pakistan and exhibitors from 17 foreign countries set up more than 330 bookstalls at the Karachi Expo Center for the five-day 17th KIBF. The event brought together publishers from all over the world at a single platform. Publishers from Iran, India, Turkey, Singapore, China, Malaysia, England, the UAE, and other countries participated in the international event.

According to the KIBF organizers, more than 330 stands displayed books on all subjects for the readers, including a vast number of families, students, and book lovers from all over the country. KIBF aims to motivate the nation’s youth and students to take part in cultural and creative activities to strengthen their role as the pillars of an intellectually, scientifically, and culturally flourishing national future.
Maiden Participation by Hilal Publications
For the very first time, Hilal Publications from Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) also participated in the event and presented their work to the wider audience. The publications included various books, including Operation Sherdil, Moonglade and Struggle for Pakistan, etc; monthly magazines: Hilal English, Hilal Urdu, Hilal for Kids and Hilal for Her; and monthly Press Review. With an unmatched legacy of the publication spanning more than three quarters of a century, not only has the magazine and the name Hilal grown steadily in number, circulation and scope over the years, it has become a leading source of analysis and information, while adapting and developing according to the time’s needs. In a world that is shaped by rapid technological developments and has become increasingly complex, it is essential to evolve the conversation as per the needs and emerging challenges. The magazine is playing a central role in remembering and staying true to our national identity while developing cohesion as it continues to provide open-source intelligence to the audience. The readers get an insight into the contributions of Armed Forces, the country’s history and the martyrs besides other issues. The effort would help bringing the citizens and the Armed Forces on one page while separating facts from propaganda. The kids showed huge interest in Hilal for Kids magazine, which is available in both English and Urdu languages.
KIBF was one of the successful events which celebrated literature and provided a platform to readers and writers to get their hands on a variety of books.
